  • May 22nd: VCOM Schedules Safety Day:  The Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine presents Community Safety Day from 11AM - 3PM at VCOM. The event will include education, safety events, and more for the entire family. Various activities include a Jaws of Life demonstration, Police Dog demonstration, Self Defense Class for Men/Women, tours of local fire, police, and rescue vehicles, Bike Rodeo (Kids: bring your bikes and helmets), Child Safety Seat demonstration, Carilion helicopter landing, FREE food, door prizes, and much more!   • June 17th: Titan Leadership Institute Workshop-Today's Leaders Make Tomorrow's History:  Join Titan at the Roanoke Higher Education Center for a leadership development workshop that that will provide participants with a roadmap for intentional development.   • June 21st: Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech Groundbreaking Ceremony:  Join Virginia Tech as they break ground for the new Center for the Arts. The ceremony will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Shultz Lawn (Corner of Main Street and Alumni Mall). A reception will follow. RSVP by Friday, June 11 to Katy Baker.

  • Mary Miller Recognized as First Computer Science Inductee to the Academy of Engineering Excellence: Mary Miller is a 2010 inductee into Virginia Tech's College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellenceand the first CS alumnus to receive this prestigious honor. Dr. Miller, founder of Interactive Design and Development, Inc. has assisted in Virginia's efforts to strategize and implement the use of technology across the state's agencies and institutions of higher learning, and remains a member of Virginia's Information Technology Investment Board.
     
  • Advanced Logic Industries Achieves Minority Business Certification: Advanced Logic Industries is pleased to announce completion of certification as a Minority Owned Business by the Department of Minority Business Enterprise. According to Don Davis, Vice President of Network Integration, "This is a great thing for both ALI and our clients. This certification enables our clients to leverage ALI's services while meeting Diversity Supplier goals."
     
  • Prominent Green Tech Blog Highlights MiserWare: MiserWare, Inc., who launched a new energy-saving software that aims to cut the energy wasted by computers, was featured on the Greener Computing's blog "GreenBiz". The program, which can cut energy use by 30 percent without affecting performance, works on x86 platforms for servers, desktops and laptops that are running Windows or Linux, matches the computing demands of system with the energy used.
     
  • NewCity spinout launches iPhone App: Nomad Mobile Guides, a spinout of member company NewCity, just launched its first iPhone travel guide apps built on the Nomad engine. The guides to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park were developed in collaboration with the National Park Service and the Great Smoky Mountains Association.
     
  • Electro-Miniatures Corp. Selected for MREO UGV Sensor Slip Ring: Electro-Miniatures was selected by Lockheed Martin to develop prototype slip rings for the Medium Range Electro-Optic Sensor for the Unmanned Ground Vehicle (MREO UGV) being developed as part of the Army Brigade Combat Team Modernization effort. This new sensor will be smaller, lighter and more robust than previous iterations. In addition to electrical power and signal circuits it will also handle fiber optic data signals.
     
  • UXB Supports the U.S. Airforce: UXB International, Inc., the sole North American distributor of Dynasafe products, has sold a Mobile Explosion Containment Vessel to the U.S. Air Force. This unique device is designed for the safe containment and removal of items possibly containing explosives, toxic, radiological materials or a combination. .
     
  • Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech to Break Ground: The Center for the Arts at Virginia Tech is set to break ground on June 21, 2010. The university expects to help improve the overall quality of life by increasing the number of high-caliber visual and performing exhibitions and performances. NCTC Members are invited to the Groundbreaking Ceremony, Monday, June 21, 2010, beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Shultz Lawn (Corner of Main Street and Alumni Mall). A reception will follow.   • Radford Announces New Building for Business School: Radford University broke ground on a new facility for the College of Business and Economics. The complex is being constructed with the goal of achieving LEED Gold designation and a minimum designation of Silver is assured. Construction will begin immediately and the planned completion date is fall 2012.
     
  • tba Creates one of Virginia's top newspaper ads and Names New Principals: The Virginia Press Association has recognized tba (the becher agency) for creating one of the best newspaper ads of 2009. The winning ad was created for HoneyTree Early Learning Centers to promote its Spanish classes. tba also named Carolyn Kiser and Chris McAdams principals of the public relations and advertising agency.
